About the condition

Manual lymphatic drainage is a light, rhythmic hands-on technique that helps move excess fluid out of a swollen area. It is used for lymphedema, swelling after surgery or injury, scar healing, and recovery after cosmetic procedures.

It is a useful technique, but it is not a replacement for physical therapy. If you have pain, an injury, weakness or restricted movement, treatment should start with a full assessment — and drainage may then be one part of the plan.

How we treat it

  • Assessment to confirm lymphatic drainage suits your condition
  • Gentle, targeted drainage to reduce swelling and edema
  • Support for recovery after surgery or injury
  • Techniques that help scars heal better
  • Combined with exercise and other treatment when needed
  • Guidance you can carry on with at home

What the sessions look like

We begin by finding the real cause of the swelling, rather than defaulting to the most talked-about session.

The treatment itself is light and comfortable — no strong pressure.

Where it fits, drainage is combined with the rest of your rehabilitation for the best result.

Common questions

Can lymphatic drainage replace physical therapy?

No. It is effective for specific goals such as reducing swelling. But if you have pain, an injury or weakness, physical therapy is the foundation — drainage can be part of it, not a substitute.

Is it painful?

No. It uses very light, gentle pressure and most people find it relaxing.
