About the condition

Neurological conditions — multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, peripheral nerve injury, spinal cord problems, Bell’s palsy and others — affect movement in ways that ordinary strengthening does not address. The muscle may be capable; the signal reaching it is the problem.

Neurological physiotherapy works on the control of movement rather than just its power: balance, coordination, gait, tone, and the specific tasks that a condition has taken away.

How we treat it

  • Detailed assessment of movement quality, tone, balance, sensation and gait
  • Task-specific and repetition-based training targeted at the function you have lost
  • Balance and falls prevention, which for many neurological patients is the priority
  • Gait re-education, including with walking aids where they help
  • Strategies for fatigue management, since fatigue governs what is achievable in many conditions
  • Advice on aids and adaptations, and training for the family

What the sessions look like

The plan depends heavily on whether the condition is stable, improving or progressive — and we will be clear with you about which we are working with.

For progressive conditions the goal is often maintaining function and independence for longer, which is a real and valuable outcome even when it is not a cure.

We measure with functional markers so you can see what is holding and what is changing.

Common questions

Can physiotherapy help a progressive condition?

Yes. It does not reverse the condition, but it maintains strength, balance and independence for longer, reduces falls, and manages the secondary problems that come from moving less. Those are meaningful outcomes.

Do you treat Bell’s palsy?

Yes. Facial rehabilitation with specific retraining, and we will tell you at assessment what timeline is realistic for your presentation.
