Staying steady on your feet is the single best thing for an older person’s independence.

About the condition

Losing strength and balance with age is common, but it is not something to simply accept. A fall is often the event that ends independent living — not because of the fracture alone, but because of the fear and inactivity that follow it.

The encouraging part is that strength and balance respond to training at any age. Older adults build muscle and improve balance measurably, and the effect on daily confidence is usually larger than the numbers suggest.

How we treat it

  • Assessment of balance, walking, strength and falls risk, with objective tests we can repeat
  • Progressive strength training — genuinely progressive, because too-easy exercise achieves nothing
  • Balance and reaction training, the part that actually prevents falls
  • Walking and stairs practice, and confident use of a stick or frame if one is needed
  • Management of arthritis pain so it stops limiting activity
  • Home safety advice, and sessions at home for patients who cannot travel

What the sessions look like

We start where you are. Nobody is too frail to begin — the starting point simply changes.

Measured markers such as sit-to-stand time and walking speed tell us it is working, and they tend to move sooner than people expect.

The goal is practical: managing stairs, getting out of a chair unaided, walking to the shop, and not being afraid of falling.

Common questions

My father is 80 and quite weak. Is it too late?

No. Strength and balance improve with training well into the eighties and nineties. The programme starts gentler, but the response is real and often quite quick.

Can you come to the house?

Yes. For many older patients we start at home, particularly where balance makes travelling risky, and move to the clinic if and when that becomes possible.
