About the condition

Sciatica is pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the leg, often with numbness, tingling or weakness. It usually comes from irritation of the sciatic nerve — commonly a lumbar disc, or tightness in the surrounding muscles.

The reassuring part is that most sciatica settles with the right conservative treatment. The aim is to take the irritation off the nerve and deal with the mechanical cause behind it.

How we treat it

  • Assessment to confirm where the nerve is being irritated and to rule out warning signs
  • The positions and movements that ease the pain and draw it back out of the leg
  • Manual therapy to reduce pressure on the nerve
  • Progressive core, hip and nerve-mobility exercises
  • Advice on sitting, driving and daily activity during a flare-up
  • A home program to keep the nerve settled and prevent it recurring

What the sessions look like

We map exactly which movements ease your symptoms and which provoke them, then build the plan around that.

The leg pain usually eases before the back pain — a sign the plan is working.

From there we move you on from calming the nerve to rebuilding strength.

Common questions

Does sciatica always end in surgery?

No. The large majority of cases improve with conservative physical therapy. Surgery is only considered in specific situations, and we will tell you if a medical review is warranted.

Should I stay in bed until it passes?

Prolonged bed rest usually slows recovery. We guide you toward gentle, safe movement that helps the nerve calm down faster.
